Meeks Delivers 18 Kills as Volleyball Opens With Win Over Pfeiffer
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba grabbed a win over Pfeiffer in four games to open its volleyball season on Friday afternoon in the Catawba Invitational Tournament at Goodman Gym. It was also the opener for the Falcons. Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) led the way for the Catawba Indians with 18 kills. Catawba won by the scores of 25-20, 23-25, 25-12 and 25-16.
Catawba rallied to take the opening game. Down 15-11, the Lady Indians reeled off eight of the next nine points to go up 19-16. Meeks delivered three kills in the run. Catawba kept the lead from there with Meeks adding an ace then a kill to end the game.
Pfeiffer responded in game two, jumping to a 16-10 edge after a kill by Kristina Mordini. Catawba closed within a point at 17-16, but the Falcons pulled back ahead and got to 24-20 on another Mordini kill. Jordan O’Bryant killed off the final point for Pfeiffer after the Lady Indians ran off three straight points to close to 24-23.
Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry HS) and Lainey Edwards (Asheboro, NC/Asheboro HS) served Catawba to a quick 11-2 lead in game three. Pfeiffer never got back into the game as the Lady Indians hit at 25% to just 3% for the Falcons.
Young, with the help of two kills from Meeks, served Catawba to a 5-0 lead in the deciding game which it would never relinquish. The Lady Indians hit a sparkling 41% in the final set with Meeks collecting five kills.
Freshman Anna Logan (Yadkinville, NC/Mt. Tabor HS) added 11 kills with four blocks for Catawba. Sophomore Alli Parrish (Zebulon, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) handed out 39 assists in her first match as setter, while Edwards and Young led the way in digs with 16 and 14, respectively. Young served up five aces.
Mordini led Pfeiffer with a dozen kills and recorded 11 digs. Kaci Markham had a team-high 18 digs with Abbie Ovbey collecting four blocks. Colleen Wands had 32 assists.
