Volleyball Splits Final Matches in Catawba Invitational
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba split a pair of volleyball matches on Saturday afternoon at the Catawba Invitational Tournament at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians were swept by Armstrong Atlantic in their first match then rebounded to top Shippensburg in five games to improve to 3-1 on the year.
Shaw Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) led Catawba with a double-double of 15 kills and 15 digs, while adding four blocks. Libero Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry HS) totaled 32 digs and freshman Anna Logan (Yadkinville, NC/Mt. Tabor HS) collected nine kills and six blocks.
Logan had a pair of blocks and a kill in an early run to open the fifth game in the win over Shippensburg, giving Catawba a 7-2 edge. The Raiders rallied to tie the game at 12-all, but then committed a service error and an attack error to give the Lady Indians a match point. Katie Moran (Northville, MI/Northville HS) killed off the final point as Catawba took the match 25-19, 23-25, 25-13, 20-25 and 15-12.
AASU had rolled to a 25-16, 25-15 and 25-15 win in an earlier match. Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) posted eight kills to lead Catawba. She had 22 digs in the win over Shippensburg. Denise Grissom (Stokesdale, NC/Rockingham Co. HS) recorded 11 digs in the loss.
