Volleyball Drops League-Opener to Wingate


SALISBURY, NC -- Wingate swept past host Catawba in three games in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym.  The Bulldogs improve to 3-1 overall and win their league opener by the scores of 25-15, 25-22 and 25-16.  The Catawba Indians fall to 3-2 and 0-1.

Stormi Gale (Richmond, TX) led the Wingate attack with 14 kills and a .480 hitting percentage, making just two errors in 25 swings.  She recorded a double-double by adding 10 digs.  Libero Maggie Malone (Chicago, IL) collected a team-leading 14 digs with Liz Willis (Raleigh, NC) totaling 12 digs and 20 assists.  Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) led Catawba with 11 kills.  Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) posted 12 digs.

Lauren Billo (Orland Park, IL) and Grace Krauser (Louisville, KY) each posted two kills in a 5-0 run early in the opening game to give Wingate an 8-3 edge.  A kill by Katie Moran (Northville, MI/Northville HS) kept Catawba close at 16-12, but the Bulldogs scored eight of the last 10 points with Gale collecting kills on the final three points.

Catawba used a 9-3 spurt to grab a 10-7 lead in game two.  Anna Logan (Yadkinville, NC/Mt. Tabor HS) had a kill and two blocks in the run for the Lady Indians.  Wingate regrouped and regained the lead at 13-12 on consecutive kills by Janice Ehorn (Orange, CT).  A kill by Billo upped the Bulldog edge to 19-14.  Logan and Meeks each had two late kills to pull Catawba within 24-22, but Gale again killed off the game point.

Wingate erased an early Catawba lead in the final game and used a 10-2 run to pull away from a 7-7 tie.  Ehorn had three kills in the run with Gale adding two kills and a block.  Katie Handy (Palos Verdes, CA) killed off the final point to end the match.
