Men's Soccer Knocked From Unbeaten Ranks by Penalty Kick
BELMONT, NC -- Jack Reid scored the lone goal of the match on a penalty kick to lift host Belmont Abbey to a 1-0 win over Catawba in men’s soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 1-2, while the Catawba Indians fall to 2-1.
Reid notched the game-winner in the 54th minute to break the scoreless tie. It marked the third penalty goal in as many matches for the Crusaders this season. Catawba had its chance from the spot just four minutes later, but Carson Smith (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS) was denied on his penalty try by John Max Bolling.
Bolling would come up big in the waning seconds as Catawba made one final push. Off a corner kick to the back post, Jonas Nader’s (Monroe, NC/Piedmont HS) shot was deflected wide as time expired.
Catawba out-shot the Crusaders 13-11 and held a 6-5 edge in corner kicks. Bolling made six saves in the net, and counterpart Luke McCarthy (Naples, FL/Naples HS) scooped up three saves.
