SALISBURY, NC -- Freshman Athena Bless (Asheboro, NC/SW Randolph HS) scored an overtime game-winner to lift the Catawba Indians to a 1-0 win over visiting USC Aiken in women’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Frock Field.  With the win, the Catawba Indians move to 3-1-1, while the Pacers fall to 1-3.

It marked the third overtime in as many home matches for the Lady Indians, who finally notched their first home goal of the year after 310 minutes.  Bless picked up the winner after taking a pass in the box from Juliana Conte (Hampton, Ontario, CANADA/ Archbishop O’Conner HS) and beating USC Aiken keeper Nicole Westphal (Springfield, VA) to the inside of the right post.

With the goal, Bless took over the team lead with her third goal on the season.  Catawba’s Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) made three saves in posting her third shutout on the year.  The Lady Indians have not allowed a goal since the season opener, a 1-0 overtime home loss.  Webster has a streak of 358 scoreless minutes in goal for Catawba.

Westphal had six saves for the Pacers, and forced the extra time with two saves in the final seconds of regulation.  First, she defelcted a shot by Conte off a post with 15 seconds remaining, then snatched a shot off the foot of Kaitlyn McFarland (Indian Harbor Beach, FL/Satellite HS) with just six seconds to go.

USCA had a pair of quality chances midway through the opening half, but Wesbster denied the Pacers.  She dove to stop a header by Alex Cohen (Evans, GA) then slid to knock away a chance from Cassey Lloyd (Lexington, SC).  Aiken had only one shot after the opening half as Catawba began to control play and finished with a 13-3 edge in shots.
