Whitmer's 20 Kills Not Enough as Volleyball Falls in Three
MARS HILL, NC -- Host Mars Hill posted a three-game sweep of Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Stanford Arena. The Lady Lions took the match by the scores of 25-19, 27-25 and 25-22. With the win, Mars Hill improves 5-4 overall and 2-4 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 4-5 and 1-4.
Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) led Catawba with 20 kills and hit at 32%. Freshman Anna Logan (Yadkinville, NC/Mt. Tabor HS) added 11 kills and posted five blocks. Evie Tafunai led a trio of Lady Lions with double-figure kills. She had a dozen with Marissa Wixson and Laura Ann Huskey each adding 10 kills. Libero Maggie Murphy delivered 30 digs and Becca Smith had 40 assists.
Mars Hill hit 32% in the opening game and stormed to a 9-1 lead. Down 22-14, Catawba tried to rally with a four-point on run on two kills each from Logan and Whitmer. The Lady Lions held on as Wixson had the final two points on kills for Mars Hill.
Mars Hill led most of game two, but Catawba rallied from a 21-17 deficit to lead 24-23. Two straight Lady Lion points earned a game point which Whitmer staved off with a kill. Huskey killed a point for a 26-25 lead and Mars Hill went up 2-0 after an attack error.
Another quick start by Mars Hill in game three had the Lady Lions up 11-4. Whitmer had seven kills, including four in a row at one point, to keep Catawba close at a 16-14 deficit. Catawba made one final push down 23-18 as Whitmer had two kills and a block to close the gap to 23-22. A ball handling error gave Mars Hill a match point which it won on a block by Huskey.
