Men's Soccer Strikes Twice in 2nd Half to Take Win Over Barton
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba got a pair of second-half goals and defeated visiting Barton 2-0 in men’s soccer action on Wednesday night at Frock Field. The Catawba Indians match their win total of last season as they improve to 5-1-1 on the year. The Bulldogs fall to 1-6.
After a scoreless opening half, Catawba scored twice in a span of four minutes to claim the win. Sophomore Carson Smith (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS) assisted on both goals. First, he freed Valentin Nava (Salisbury, NC/Carson HS) on a breakaway then delivered a perfect corner that freshman Keith Cooper (Hickory, NC/St. Stephens HS) knocked in for the two-goal cushion.
In the 63rd minute, Nava broke loose and dribbled past Barton keeper Brian Riesenberg (Ft. Thomas, KY) then fired a shot from the right to beat a pair of rushing Bulldog defenders. Three and half minutes later Cooper headed home Smith’s corner kick.
The clean sheet was the fourth straight by Catawba. The Indians last posted four consecutive shutouts back in 1992. Luke McCarthy (Naples, FL/Naples HS) had a pair of saves to register his second individual shutout. Riesenberg made four saves for the Bulldogs.
