Volleyball Snaps Three-Game Skid With Win at Brevard
BREVARD, NC -- Catawba got a double-double of 11 kills and 11 digs from Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) in a three-game sweep of host Brevard in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Boshamer Gym. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 25-23, 25-17 and 25-20 to improve to 5-5 overall and 2-4 in the SAC. The Tornados fall to 2-9 and 0-6.
Setter Jordan Raye (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) served up a team-high three aces with 14 assists and four digs to aid Catawba. Freshman Emily Richardson (Salem, VA/Salem HS) had five kills and three blocks. Libero Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry HS) registered a dozen digs.
Ashlie Morrison led Brevard with 10 kills and added seven digs. Kortney Conner posted seven kills with 10 digs and setter Bethany Stevenson delivered 30 assists.
Brevard started strong in the opening game and took a 15-12 lead after a kill by Jordei Osby. A block by Jamie Atkinson and Erin Rollins pushed the Tornado lead to 19-14. A service error and an attack error would spark the Catawba rally. Whitmer and Katie Moran (Northville, MI/Northville HS) followed with kills and Anna Logan (Yadkinville, NC/Mt. Tabor HS) tied the game with an ace. Richardson added a kill and block as the Lady Indians went on top 21-19.
Raye served an ace to give Catawba a 23-21 edge then a Whitmer kill gave the Lady Indians their first game point at 24-22. Morrison staved off the first attempt, but Alli Parrish (Zebulon, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) killed off the game on the next point for Catawba.
Catawba scored the first six points of the second game on the serve of Raye and led 12-4 after a kill by Moran. Brevard rallied within 14-11 after kills by Osby and Conner, but Whitmer stopped the run on a kill as the Lady Indians went back up 17-11. Catawba stayed up by four the rest of the game and Whitmer recorded a block and three kills down the stretch.
The Lady Indians started game three strong and went on top 14-8 after a kill and block by Richardson. Brevard responded with five straight points to pull within 14-13 following a block by Osby. Catawba stayed in front and kills by Whitmer and Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) capped a 5-1 Catawba run for a 19-14 edge.
Down 22-15, Brevard pulled close at 22-20 after consecutive kills by Morrison and a Catawba hitting error. A Tornado service error followed by an attack error led to a Catawba match point which Logan cashed in with an ace.
