Women's Soccer Salvages Tie in SAC Opener
MARS HILL, NC – Catawba played host Mars Hill to a 1-1 draw in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Meares Stadium. The Catawba Indians now stand at 4-1-2 overall and 0-0-1 in the SAC, while the Lady Lions are 4-1-2 and 1-0-2.
Mars Hill scored first as Artavia Murray tallied her first of the year in the 67th minute. It marked just the second goal Catawba had allowed all season. Brittany Downs picked up the assist. Catawba got the equalizer with just over 10 minutes to play when a shot by Sydney Robertson (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS/W. Carolina) was directed into the goal by a Mars Hill defender for an own goal.
Neither team could score in the extra time with Catawba taking two shots to just one for Mars Hill. The teams each fired 13 shots on the day with the Lady Indians holding an 11-3 edge in corners. Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) registered six saves in goal for Catawba. Chelsea Parker made five saves for Mars Hill.
