Volleyball Drops Three-Game Match at Lenoir-Rhyne
HICKORY, NC -- Host Lenoir-Rhyne grabbed a three-game sweep over Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Gym. The Bears moved to 6-6 overall and 3-4 in the SAC with the 25-17, 25-16 and 27-25 win. The Catawba Indians fell to 5-6 and 2-5.
Catawba managed just 26 kills on the day and had one more hitting errors than kills over the first two games. Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) led the Lady Indians with six kills and added three blocks. Libero Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry HS) recorded nine digs. Brooke Christenberry led the Bears with 10 kills and added seven digs. Libero Marrissa Church totaled 19 digs.
Lenoir-Rhyne held the lead nearly the entire first game after pulling away from a 3-3 tie. The Bears went up 19-12 after a kill by Cayla Crawley. Catawba pulled within 20-16 after a pair of LR hitting errors, but Lindsey Cantu had a kill and later an ace as the Bears won five of the last six points.
Catawba led game two early, but consecutive kills by Cantu in a four-point run put the Bears up 10-8. The game was tight until the end when Lenoir-Rhyne scored the final seven points.
The Lady Indians looked to be on the way to forcing a fourth game, leading out of the gates in game three and holding a 22-13 lead. Lenoir-Rhyne rallied as Catawba committed three serving errors down the stretch. Down 24-18, the Bears scored six straight points to tie the game. Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) stopped the run with a kill, but Kayla Morrow answered with an LR kill then Anna Johnson ended the match with back-to-back kills.
