Men's Soccer Falls Short on Upset Bid of #25 Mars Hill
MARS HILL, NC – Nationally-ranked Mars Hill overcame an early deficit to top visiting Catawba 2-1 in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Meares Stadium. Richard Osterloh scored the game-winner two minutes into the second half as the 25th-ranked Lions improved to 7-0-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fell to 5-2-1 and 0-1.
Freshman Domhnall Minogue (Greystones, IRELAND/Presentation) got Catawba on the board first as he converted from short distance off a free kick from Carson Smith (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS). That would be the lone shot for the Indians in the opening half and Mars Hill finally put in the equalizer in the 35th minute. Isaiah Schafer scored off an assist from Stephen Bivens. The Lions took 11 shots in the opening half.
Just after the break, Osterloh put home the eventual winner on an assist from Shadi Harb. Catawba did muster six shots in the final half, but could not come up with the tying goal. Luke McCarthy (Naples, FL/Naples HS) posted four saves for the Indians, while Zac Scott had a pair of stops for Mars Hill.
