Volleyball Gets Past USC Aiken in Five Games
AIKEN, SC -- Catawba rallied to pull out a five-game win over host USC Aiken in volleyball action on Friday night at Student Activities Center Gym Friday. The Catawba Indians took the match by the scores of 25-15, 19-25, 17-25, 25-21 and 15-11 to even their mark at 6-6. The Pacers fall to 7-8.
Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) led Catawba with 17 kills and Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) added 13 kills and 10 digs. Libero Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry HS) registered 28 digs, setter Jordan Raye (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) dished out 46 assists and Anna Logan (Yadkinville, NC/Mt. Tabor HS) provided eight kills and five blocks.
Catawba dug itself out of hole after falling down two games to one. A late run in game four pushed the match to the limit. Down 19-18, Whitmer tied it with a kill and Logan put Catawba up 20-19 with an ace. Whitmer added another kill and joined Emily Richardson (Salem, VA/Salem HS) for a block to push the lead to 23-19. Whitmer killed off the final point.
In the fifth game, Catawba jumped to a quick 5-0 lead on kills by Richardson and Whitmer and three Pacer attack errors. USCA would close to within a point three times down the stretch but kills by Whitmer, Logan and Meeks kept Catawba out front. After Meeks’ kill for a 13-11 lead, Logan and MacKenzie White (Mt. Ulla, NC/Carson HS) combined on a block to give the Lady Indians a match point which came on a Pacer error.
The Lady Indians surged to a 16-5 lead in the opening game and won easily. Catawba led 19-17 in the second game, but Aiken reeled off the final eight points. The Pacers took the lead as it pulled away late in game three. Leading 15-14, USCA won eight of nine points to take control.
Megan Disney (Knoxville, TN), Shannon Byers (Morristown, MN) and Leah Rodgers (Longwood, FL) all tallied nine kills for Aiken, while Lindsay Mortenson (Aliso Viejo, CA) and Emily Maassen (Ellisville, MO) both chipped in with eight.
