Men's Soccer Loses Physical Contest With Wingate
SALISBURY, NC -- Jamie McKenna (Blackpool, ENGLAND) scored a pair of second-half goals to lead Wingate to a 2-0 victory over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action on Monday night at Frock Field. The Bulldogs improve to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 5-4-1 and 0-3.
McKenna’s first goal came off a cross from teammate Luke Mulholland (Preston, ENGLAND) in the 51st minute. The senior’s second goal came in the 73rd minute as Corey McCollom (Monroe, NC) delivered a free kick from midfield. Wingate controlled most of the game, taking 20 shots, six on goal. Catawba could only respond with one attempt on goal.
The game was emotional and heated as both teams combined for 35 fouls and seven yellow cards. Bulldog’s Joey Calandra (Mount Pleasant, SC) made one save and picked up the shutout. Indian Evan Harvey (Apex, NC/Apex) played the final 50 minutes when starting goalie Luke McCarthy (Naples, FL/Naples) left early after colliding with Wingate’s Paul Gallagher (Strabane, N. IRELAND) causing both players to exit the game. Harvey had one save, while McCarthy stopped three shots without allowing a goal.
