Women's Soccer Falls Behind Early in Loss at Wingate
WINGATE, NC -- Host Wingate got a goal and an assist from Izabella Miranda and held off Catawba for a 2-1 win in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Monday night at the WU Soccer Complex. The Bulldogs improve to 4-1-3 overall and 2-0-1 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 5-2-2 and 1-1-1.
Miranda scored quickly, finding the net after a pass from Kelly Adams in the fifth minute. Miranda would assist on a goal by Chelsey Horan in the 20th minute to stake the Bulldogs to a 2-0 lead.
Catawba managed just one shot in the opening half, but fought back in the final half to out-shoot the Bulldogs 5-3 in the final 45 minutes. Catawba cut the margin in half just seconds after red cards were issued to both teams which went to Wingate’s Holly Holsclaw and Catawba’s Kristen Girardi (Asheville, NC/N. Buncombe HS/W. Carolina). Athena Bless (Asheboro, NC/SW Randolph HS) tallied her team-leading fourth goal from Juliana Conte (Hampton, Ontario, CANADA/Holy Trinity Catholic) in the 73rd minute.
Wingate finished with a 12-6 edge in shots and had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) made five saves in goal for Catawba, while Miriam Boucher notched one save for the Bulldogs.
