Young Posts Career-High 36 Digs in Volleyball's Five-Game Loss to Anderson
SALISBURY, NC -- Visiting Anderson got 27 kills from Jamie Lancaster (Fountain Inn, SC) in a five-game win over Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Trojans won by the scores of 20-25, 25-19, 25-21, 16-25 and 15-11 to improve to 11-5 overall and 5-3 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 7-9 and 2-6.
Lancaster hit at 26.8% for the contest as she posted her third 25+ match of the year on 71 swings. The senior added a team-high 22 digs along with Marlie Bryant (Easley, SC). Tori Calhoun (Costa Mesa, CA) followed with 14 kills and Chelsea Olson (Huntington Beach, CA) totaled 10. Setter Lindsay Doggett (Jacksonville, AL) handed out 41 assists.
Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) led Catawba with 15 kills, while freshman Anna Logan (Yadkinville, NC/Mt. Tabor HS) added 11 kills and four blocks. Libero Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry HS) recorded a career-best 36 digs, while Megan Courson (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS) came off the bench in game two and finished with 32 assists. Freshman Emily Richardson (Salem, VA/Salem HS) added five blocks.
Anderson jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the deciding fifth game before Catawba put together a rally. Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) served Catawba within 7-5 then Courson put down a kill to cut the margin to 10-9. Calhoun responded with consecutive kills for a 12-9 edge and Lancaster killed off the last two points for the Trojans.
Catawba held off Anderson in a tight opening game. Richardson put Catawba up 22-20 on a kill then teamed with Meeks and Alli Parrish (Zebulon, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) on blocks for the final two points.
The Trojans rebounded to take the next two games. In game two they used a 12-2 run to turn an 8-4 deficit into a 16-10 edge. Lancaster had three straight kills in the run, while Olson capped the surge with a pair of aces. Catawba staged a late rally in the third game after falling down 18-13. Whitmer killed a point to cut the Anderson lead to 22-21, but Lancaster had two kills around an ace by Lindsay Doggett (Jacksonville, AL) to take the game.
The Lady Indians hit at 42% in game four to draw even. MacKenzie White (Mt. Ulla, NC/Carson HS) had two kills and an ace to help Catawba to an early 8-2 lead. A kill and an ace by Lancaster cut the lead to 17-12, but Catawba won five of the next six points for a 22-13 edge.
