SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba sophomore Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) tallied 19 kills and 13 digs to lead the Lady Indians to a five-game win over visiting Newberry in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym.  The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 19-25, 25-21, 25-19, 22-25 and 15-7 to improve to 8-9 overall and 3-6 in the SAC.  The Wolves fall to 10-9 and 3-6.

Whitmer hit at 44.7% for the contest on 38 swings.  She recorded her double-double by earning 13 digs, while also adding three assisted blocks to her totals.  Jordan Raye (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) assisted in 44 Catawba points in the five-game set.  Senior Lainey Edwards (Asheboro, NC/Asheboro HS) had a team-high 14 digs with freshman Anna Logan (Yadkinville, NC/Mt. Tabor HS) recorded five blocks, including one solo.

The Wolves were led by an even attack between Samantha Parrish (Angola, IN), Sarah Scott (Redding, CA), and Kara Harris (Grandview, TX).  The trio combined for 45 kills.  Blair Browning (New Lexington, OH) set up 44 of the team’s 61 assists, as well as adding 13 digs of her own.  Libero Nadia Andrade (Belo Horizonte, BRAZIL) took top defensive honors with 18 digs.  Senior Leah Nye (Hoover, AL) added five blocks to the team’s efforts.

Newberry started the deciding fifth game with a quick 2-0 lead before Catawba called timeout.  After the break, Whitmer recorded her 18th kill of the match and then served Catawba to a 5-3 lead.  The Lady Indians never looked back by extending the lead to as high as eight at 14-6.  Newberry’s Anne Staudinger (Fort Wayne, IN) killed the next point before Whitmer would fittingly kill off the game’s final point.

In the opening game, Catawba led 14-13 midway through before the Wolves got four quick points, including two Indian attack errors.  The Lady Indians never caught up in dropping the opening game.

Catawba rebounded to take the next two games.  The Lady Indians never trailed in game two althought the game played within two points much of the ay.  Catawba used a late four-point run to secure the win.  Catawba hit 40.5% and was lead by Anna Logan (Yadkinville, NC/Mt. Tabor HS) with five kills.

In the third game, Catawba was down early at 9-6 before starting a comeback.  Behind the serving of Logan, the Lady Indians scored four straight points to gain a 12-10 lead.  Catawba stayed on top after that with Whitmer posting four of her seven kills of the game over the final six points for the Lady Indians.

The Wolves rallied to take game four and force the final fifth game behind the attacks of Samantha Parrish and Sarah Scott.  The duo each posted five kills.  Whitmer added six kills in the game for Catawba, but no other Lady Indian could tally more than one kill.
