Whitmer Tallies 18 Kills in Volleyball's Four-Game Loss at Wingate
WINGATE, NC -- Host Wingate posted its 15th-straight win in topping Catawba in four games in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs, who now have a 56-match winning streak in league matches, improved to 17-1 overall and 10-0 in the SAC with the 24-26, 25-19, 25-17 and 23-25 victory. The Catawba Indians fell to 8-10 and 3-7.
Catawba got an outstanding effort from Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS), who collected a game-high 18 kills while hitting at 30.6%. She also added 13 digs. Freshman Anna Logan (Yadkinville, NC/Mt. Tabor HS) also reached double figured in kills with 10, while libero Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry HS) had 29 digs. Setter Jordan Raye (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) delivered 40 assists, 17 digs and four kills.
Wingate was led by Lauren Billo and Stormi Gale, who each recorded double-doubles. Billo had 16 kills and 15 digs, while Gale matched the 16 kills and had 10 digs. Setter Liz Willis led the team with 27 assists and 18 digs.
The opening game was tied 17 times, including each point after kills by Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) and Whitmer tied it at 18-all. Catawba went up 21-20 after a service error and a Whitmer kill. A Logan kill gave the Lady Indians their first game point at 24-23 then Whitmer cashed in the second chance after a Wingate service error.
A 6-1 run early in game two staked the Bulldogs to a 14-8 lead. Catawba never got closer than four the rest of the game with Cory McGowan killing off the last point. The Lady Indians could not match Wingate’s 50% hitting in game three that included a 15-3 run which erased a 9-7 deficit.
Catawba looked in position to force a deciding fifth game, leading 17-10 after a kill by Logan. Wingate responded after Whitmer put the Lady Indians up 18-12 by reeling off nine consecutive points. Rebecca Bloemer posted three kills in the surge, while Billo added two more.
Logan served an ace to pull Catawba even at 21-all before consecutive kills by Billo. Emily Richardson (Salem, VA/Salem HS) and Whitmer answered with kills to knot the game for the last time at 23-all. Gale killed the next point to give Wingate a match point which came on a Catawba hitting error.
