Conte Scores Twice, But Women's Soccer Falls on Last Minute Goal

SALISBURY, NC -- Newberry’s Ashley Reetz (Summerville, SC) scored with just under a minute remaining to lift the visiting Wolves to a 3-2 win over Catawba in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Frock Field.  Newberry snaps a three-match losing streak and improve to 3-9 overall and 3-3 in the SAC.  The Catawba Indians drop their fourth straight and fall to 5-5-2 and 1-3-1.

Catawba twice produced one-goal leads in the opening half.  Freshman Juliana Conte (Hampton, Ontario, CANADA/Trinity Catholic) started things in the 10th minute as she took a pass from Marissa DiMarco (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern HS) and lofted a shot over Newberry goalie Emily Rhoades (Buckley, WA) from 30 yards out.  Christen Chestnutt (Debary, FL) pulled the Wolves level as she was sent through on a ball from Reetz in the 35th minute.

Conte came right back four minutes later to put the Lady Indians on top at the break as she again scored off a pass from DiMarco.  Newberry got even again just before the hour mark when Jessie Langdon (Raleigh, NC) took a long, high shot that was stopped by keeper Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS), but was deemed that momentum carried both Webster and the ball over the goal line.

Each team had several offensive pushes in the final 30 minutes with the best opportunity coming from Catawba’s Kristen Girardi (Asheville, NC/N. Buncombe HS/W. Carolina), who hit the crossbar.  Reetz would get the winner as she picked up a ball from 40 yards out and rushed in on the Catawba goal to beat Webster.

Megan Hrenchir (Lawrence, KS) played the second half in goal for Newberry and made the team’s lone save.  Webster stopped two shots for Catawba.
