Men's Soccer Picks Up First League Win
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba claimed its first league win of the season with a 3-1 victory over visiting Newberry in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action on Wednesday night at Frock Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 7-5-1 overall and 1-4 in the SAC, while the Wolves fall to 1-9-2 and 0-4-1.
Kyle Griewisch (Banner Elk, NC/Avery Co. HS) got Catawba off quickly as he tucked a shot just inside the left post in the third minute. Deon Cuffie-Joseph (Arima, TRINIDAD & TOBAGO/High Point) and Jorge Sucar (The Woodlands, TX/The Woodlands HS) added goals in the opening 30 minutes to build Catawba’s lead to 3-0.
Newberry pulled a goal back in the 33rd minute off a free kick as Colt Priest (Marietta, GA) scored on a give and go with Jack Gantzer (Fort Mill, SC). That would be the score at the break and the final as neither team could break through in the second half. Catawba’s Corey Faughnan (Jacksonville, NC/Jacksonville HS) assisted on all three Indian goals.
Each team fired 16 shots with Catawba holding a 9-1 edge in corner kicks. Catawba keeper Luke McCarthy (Naples, FL/Naples HS) recorded six saves, while Patrick Sweatt (Indian Land, SC) had one save for the Wolves. Newberry was whistled for 21 fouls to just six for the Indians.
