Volleyball Loses in Three Games at Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, TN -- Carson-Newman claimed a three-game win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Holt Fieldhouse.  The Lady Eagles won by the scores of 25-21, 27-25 and 25-18 to improve to 12-5 overall and 6-5 in the SAC.  The Catawba Indians fall to 8-11 and 3-8.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) again led the Lady Indians with 17 kills while hitting at 40%.  Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) and Emily Richardson (Salem, VA/Salem HS) each collected seven kills with libero Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry HS) totaling 19 digs.

Carson-Newman got 15 kills from Carly Mozgai along with 11 kills and seven blocks from Nikki James in the win.  The Lady Eagles totaled a dozen blocks as a team to just one for Catawba.

Tie at 13-all in the opening game, Carson-Newman got a kill and block from James along with an ace from Mozgai to take a 16-13 lead it would never give up.  Consecutive kills by Whitmer and an ace by Megan Courson (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS) cut the margin to 22-20, but Mozgai had two kills down the stretch to end the game.

Catawba rallied from an 18-13 deficit in game two to make things tight.  A kill by Whitmer sparked a six point run that put the Lady Indians up 23-22.  Richardson had a pair of kills in the surge.  Whitmer gave Catawba a game point with a kill, but Rachael Bowlin erased it with her own kill.  Richardson staved off C-N’s first game point, but Mozgai had consecutive kills to give the Lady Eagles a 2-0 edge.

Carly Swisher served an ace to help Carson-Newman to an 11-7 lead in game three.  Leading 13-9, the Lady Eagles used an 8-3 run to take control.  Catawba got as close as 23-17 before the Lady Eagles put the match away.
