Women's Soccer Snaps Skid on Wescoat's Last-Second Goal
SALISBURY, NC -- Junior Erinn Wescoat (Egg Harbor, NJ/Absegami HS) scored with just five seconds remaining to give host Catawba a 3-2 win over Lincoln Memorial in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Saturday night at Frock Field. Catawba snaps a four-game losing streak and improves to 6-5-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the SAC. The Lady Railsplitters fall to 9-3 and 2-3.
Wescoat’s goal ended a furious finish that saw three goals in the final five minutes, including two by her. With the game tied at 1-1, she followed up from Juliana Conte (Hampton, Ontario, CANADA) with a shot from inside 10 yards that glanced just off the crossbar.
Lincoln Memorial was able to draw a penalty kick with 1:35 on the clock and Sarah Harvey (Daventry, ENGLAND) converted to even the match. With overtime looming, Conte broke down the far right side and sent a cross through the box where Wescoat was able to score just inside the back post.
The teams scored just minutes apart in the opening half. Catawba got on the board first as Athena Bless (Asheboro, NC/SW Randolph NC) tallied in the 29th minute with assists from Anna Toole (Greenville, SC/Mann HS) and Alyssa Retundie (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS). LMU tied things two minutes later as Sarah Taylor (Ajax, Ontario, CANADA) scored off a free kick from Leanne Reid (Aberdeen, SCOTLAND).
LMU held a 13-12 edge in shots with Catawba holding a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) picked up seven saves for the Lady Indians, while her counterpart, LMU’s Sarah Thompson, stopped five shots.
