Nava's Goal and Two Assists Spark Men's Soccer to Win Over St. Andrews
SALISBURY, NC -- Sophomore Valentin Nava (Salisbury, NC/Carson HS) had a goal and two assists as Catawba posted a 4-2 win over visiting St. Andrews in men’s soccer action on Wednesday night at Frock Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 8-6-1, while the Knights fall to 1-13.
St. Andrews scored first midway through the opening half as Dennis Schardt (Bethesda, MD) froze Catawba goalie Evan Harvey (Apex, NC/Apex HS) with a shot from the top of the box. Catawba was able to equalize just before the half when Nava dribbled through three defenders then slotted a pass to Carson Smith (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS) at the back post.
Nava would help put Catawba up early in the second half sending a cross to Corey Faughnan (Jacksonville, NC/Jacksonville HS) in the box in the 48th minute. The Knights answered in the 55th minute as Kyle Dela Merced (Columbia, SC) collected a loose ball near the end line and scored.
Smith would tally his second of the match to put the Indians up for good in the 68th minute. He took a long ball from Faughnan and slid a shot under William Williams (Denver, CO). Nava gave Catawba a two-goal margin on an individual effort with eight minutes left, scoring from a sharp angle.
Harvey made four saves in the opening half for Catawba, while Josh Payne (Candler, NC/Enka HS) played the second half and stopped a pair of shots. Williams posted five saves for the Knights. Catawba held a 17-11 edge in shots and an 8-2 advantage in corners.
