Volleyball Drops Match to Tusculum

SALISBURY, NC -- Tusculum set up a showdown for first place in the South Atlantic Conference at Wingate on Saturday with a three-game win over host Catawba in volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym.  The Pioneers took the match 25-21, 25-15 and 25-22 to improve to 18-4 overall and 12-1 in the SAC, a game behind the league-leading Bulldogs.  The Catawba Indians fall to 9-12 and 4-9.

Allyson Ray (Hudson, FL) had 11 kills to lead a balanced Tusculum attack.  Sam Underwood (Muncie, IN) collected nine kills, Rhayne Smitherman (Columbus, OH) eight and Bailee Price (Fort Wayne, IN) seven in the win.  Setter Ashley Sarmiento (Dayton, OH) handed out 36 assists, while libero Caitlyn Dean (Fort Wayne, IN) registered 21 digs.

Catawba was led by Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS), who posted a game-high 16 kills, while Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) had 11 kills, eight digs and a block.  Setter Jordan Raye (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) tallied 37 assists and libero Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry HS) collected 25 digs.

Tusculum picked up an early lead in game one as an ace by Underwood and two kills by Ray during a 7-2 run had the Pioneers on top 15-10.  Catawba pulled within 18-16 on a kill by Whitmer, but kills by Alyssa Raterman (Urbana, OH) and Ray returned the lead to 21-16.  Kills by Meeks and Raye cut the Pioneer lead to 23-20 then Underwood killed down the final two Pioneer points to take the game.

The Pioneers surged ahead in game two with a 9-1 run to take a 17-9 advantage.  Ray had two kills in the run and added a block and a kill to help up the margin to 20-11.  Smitherman had the final point on a kill.

Down 21-17, Catawba rallied to make the game three close.  Alli Parrish (Zebulon, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) had a kill a combined with Anna Logan (Yadkinville, NC/Mt. Tabor HS) on a block to bring the Lady Indians within 21-19 and a solo block by Logan cut the margin to a single point.  Underwood had kills for Tusculum to keep the Pioneers up by a point.  Raterman delivered a kill for a 24-22 edge and Price killed off the final point.
