Volleyball Sweeps Past Mars Hill
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba hit at just over 40% to post a three-game sweep of visiting Mars Hill in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) led a trio of Catawba Indians with double-digit kills in the 25-15, 26-24 and 25-10 win. The Lady Indians improve to 10-12 overall and 5-9 in the SAC, while the Lions fall to 8-10 and 4-10.
Meeks tallied a match-high dozen kills and added a pair of blocks in the Catawba victory. Freshman Anna Logan (Yadkinville, NC/Mt. Tabor HS) collected 11 kills, a pair of aces and two blocks, while Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) posted 10 kills, 12 digs and two more aces. Jordan Raye (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) handed out 41 assists and libero Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry HS) collected 16 digs.
Mars Hill was led by Laura Ann Huskey’s (Hendersonville, NC) nine kills. Jenna Luke (Mishawaka, IN) followed with six kills and a block. Libero Maggie Murphy (Richmond, VA) provided 14 digs.
Catawba grabbed the edge early in the opening game as Meeks delivered three straight kills to give the Lady Indians an 8-3 edge. Two aces by Logan upped the margin to 13-5. Mars Hill closed within 20-14 on a kill from Huskey, but Emily Richardson (Salem, VA/Salem HS) had two kills for Catawba to stop the rally and combined on a block with MacKenzie White (Mt. Ulla, NC/Carson HS) for the game point.
The Lady Indians built a five-point lead in game two and still held that margin at 20-15 following a kill by Logan. Mars Hill would fight back from there, scoring six straight points to take the lead. Luke and Evie Tafunai (Edwardsburg, MI) had kills in the run with Murphy serving an ace. Catawba scored two straight for a 23-21 edge then Tafunai posted a kill and a solo block to tie the game at 23-all. Raye and Huskey traded kills before Whitmer ended the game on a kill and an ace.
It was all Catawba in the final game. Taylor Doss (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) opened with consecutive kills then Meeks added three more. A Whitmer ace and a combo block from White and Doss had the Lady Indians up 7-0. Whitmer posted back-to-back kills for a 15-5 lead and White killed down the final two points.
