Smith Tallies Twice as Men's Soccer Tops Tusculum
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba’s Carson Smith (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS) and Valentin Nava (Salisbury, NC/Carson HS) combined on two goals in a 3-1 win over visiting Tusculum in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action on Saturday night at Frock Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 9-6-1 overall and 2-5 in the SAC, while the Pioneers fall to 2-10-3 and 1-7.
After a scoreless first half, each team put home a goal in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Catawba scored first as Nava sent a cross to Smith at the back post for the opening goal in the 56th minute. Tusculum came right back five minutes later as Drayson Davenport (Acworth, GA) chipped a shot over Indian keeper Luke McCarthy (Naples, FL/Naples HS).
Smith got his second goal in the 70th minute to put the Indians up for good. Nava beat the Tusculum defense then sent a pass to Smith for the score. Catawba iced the match with just over a minute to play as Mark Ketterer (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert HS) ran down a ball to create a 3-on-2 breakaway and fed a perfect pass to Spencer Preston (Estero, FL/Estero HS).
Catawba held a commanding 17-8 edge in shots and had a 4-2 advantage in corners. McCarthy stopped three Pioneer shots, while TC keeper Andy Goellner (Denver, CO) posted four saves.
