Hicks' Double-Double Leads Women's Basketball Past Mount Olive
MOUNT OLLIVE, NC -- Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day) collected her second straight double-double to lead Catawba to a 71-61 win over host Mount Olive in women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Kornegay Arena. The Catawba Indians improve to 2-2, while the Trojans fall to 1-1.
Hicks delivered 25 points and 13 rebounds in the win. She hit on 9-of-11 from the field and went 7-of-8 at the line, while adding four assists and three steals. Milica Ivanovic (Belgrade, SERBIA/Sports High/Bethel) added 18 points and eight rebounds along with five steals. Kisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day) also reached double figures, scoring 14 points.
Hicks converted a pair of free throws five minutes into the game to put Catawba up 11-10 and the Lady Indians led the rest of the way. Mount Olive stayed close in the opening half with the Lady Indians lead reaching only six points. Long hit on two three-pointers in the final three minutes of the half to keep Catawba on top, including one with 10 seconds to go for a 36-30 edge at the break.
The lead remained single digits most of the second half, but the Trojans never got closer than four points. The last came at 47-43 after a pair of free throws by Jasmine Whitby with 11:33 left. Catawba took its first double-digit lead during a 6-0 run with just over five minutes remaining which was capped on a pair of free throws by Hicks at the 5:14 mark for a 61-49 advantage.
Catawba connected on 45.5% of its shots and held a 37-32 edge on the boards. Mount Olive shot just 33.9% and a mere 25% in the second half. The Lady Indians outscored Mount Olive 28-12 in the paint.
Whitby paced the Trojans with 21 points and added six rebounds. Laporsha Davis scored 11 points.
