Catawba Alum Named Interim Coach for San Francisco 49ers
Jim Tomsula, a 1989 Catawba College graduate, has been tabbed as the interim coach for the San Francisco 49ers for their last game of the 2010 NFL season. The former player and coach for the Indians will lead the 49ers in their last game at Arizona this Sunday. Tomsula takes over for Mike Singletary, who was fired after last weekend’s loss to St. Louis.
Tomsula transferred to Catawba from Middle Tennessee State and played two seasons at Catawba, recording 109 tackles with five sacks. After graduating with a degree in sports management, he returned to his alma mater to serve as a defense coach under David Bennett. During ten seasons as an assistant, Catawba went 86-29, won four conference titles and made five playoff appearances.
While at Catawba, Tomsula spent his summers coaching with NFL Europe. He won a World Bowl with the Berlin Thunder and was the Head Coach of the Rhein Fire in the league’s final season. He joined the 49ers in 2006 where he has served as the defensive line coach.
