Men's Basketball Comes Up Short Against Wingate
SALISBURY, NC -- Two free throws by Wingate’s Jamie Vaughn (McDonough, GA) with 2:19 left proved to be the winning points in the Bulldogs’ 63-61 win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. Wingate improves to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 5-6 and 1-2.

Catawba had two chances in the final 30 seconds, but failed to convert. Following a Bulldog turnover with 16 seconds left, the Indians gave the ball back with 3.8 seconds remaining on their own miscue. Keon Moore (Colerain, NC/Bertie HS) scored 11 points off the bench with Stuart Thomson (Poynton, ENGLAND/Poynton) adding 10 points and eight rebounds. The Indians played the final 25 minutes without leading scorer and rebounder, Dominick Reid (Charlotte, NC/Cannon School), who left with a concussion.
Wingate scored the first seven points and pushed the lead to as many as nine midway through the opening half. Catawba closed to within 38-35 at the break. The Bulldogs shot 54% in the first half. Huntley tied the game early in the second half and Kejuan Mayo (South Boston, VA/Halifax HS) gave the Indians their first lead at 47-46 with 12:05 to go.
A three-point play by Lee Martin (Mt. Airy, NC/N. Surry HS/Hargrave) and free throws by Huntley had Catawba up 59-54 with 6:17 left. Turner and Quan Alexander (Charlotte, NC) pulled Wingate within one and Vaughn knotted the game at 61-all with 3:58 remaining.
