Women's Basketball Falls in Overtime at Newberry
NEWBERRY, SC -- Newberry battled back in the final minutes of regulation then grabbed a 78-73 overtime win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Eleazer Arena. The Wolves improve to 10-6 overall and 5-3 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall for the third straight time and drop to 11-7 and 5-3.
In the back-and-forth battle that feature 13 ties and 13 lead changes, Catawba pulled ahead by five with 1:55 left. Jolysa Connor (Charlotte, NC/Waddell HS) had put the Lady Indians on top at 59-58 with 6:04 remaining then added a pair of free throws at the 3:27 mark. Kisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day) added two more from the stripe for the 63-58 edge.
Newberry struck quickly in pulling even. After a jumper Jessica Bearzatto and a turnover, Helen McKinney’s three-pointer with 1:24 left had the game deadlocked. Milica Ivanovic (Belgrade, SERBIA/Sports High/Bethel) hit a free throw to put Catawba back on top and added two more with 18 seconds to play for a 66-63 edge. The Wolves got a second-chance three-point play by Leanne Watson with eight seconds remaining and kept Catawba from getting off a shot in the final seconds to force the extra time.
The teams traded the lead six times in overtime with Newberry going on top for good on a pair of free throws by Leeara Creet with 1:19 left at 74-73. McKinney added two more with 49 seconds to play and Bearzatto the final two with 10 seconds remaining after several Lady Indian missed three-point tries for the final margin.
Bearzatto finished with 19 points and six assists for the Wolves. McKinney had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Watson chipped in with 14 points, while Creet grabbed 11 rebounds. Both teams shot just over 34% with Newberry holding a 56-49 edge on the boards.
Ivanovic paced Catawba, equaling her career-high with 28 points. Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day) delivered her 15th double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Elizabeth Merritt (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) pulled down 10 boards.
Catawba started quickly and went up by seven in the opening eight minutes. Newberry responded with a 14-2 run to take the lead and would eventually lead 41-31 in the final minutes of the first half. Ivanovic hit back-to-back three-pointers and Anna Dellapenta (Thomasville, NC/E. Davidson HS/Elon) a follow shot at the buzzer to bring the Lady Indians within 41-39 at the break. Neither team lead by more than five after the half.
