Baseball Rallies Past Brevard After Falling to Tusculum
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba split a pair of baseball games on Sunday at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians fell to Tusculum 7-3 then rebounded to top Brevard 12-4. The Indians, ranked 23rd in NCAA II, now stand at 2-1. Tusculum is 2-0 and Brevard 0-2.
The Indians rallied in the ninth to top Brevard, scoring nine runs. Cameron White (Columbia, SC/Ridge View HS) delivered the winning hit, doubling home Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) and pinch-runner Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) to put Catawba on top 5-4. The Indians went on to tack on seven more runs, capped by John Neese’s (Summerfield, NC/NW Guilford HS/Guilford Tech) three-run homer.
Brevard had scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to take the lead. In the seventh, Brett Brinson drove home the tying run on a ground out after a pair of walks and a wild pitch with one out. Zack Merrikan started the eighth-inning rally with a two-out single. Catawba followed with two errors to allow the go-ahead run to score.
In the first game against Tusculum, the Pioneers grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Doubles by Alexi Colon and Sean Cotton plated the initial run and Nate Reid had a run-scoring single. Catawba pulled a run back in the third as Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS) knocked in Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS) with a two-out single up the middle. The Indians threatened again in the fourth, but left the bases stranded.
Tusculum added to its lead in the sixth as Matt Henriksen connected on his third home run of the season, a two-run shot, for a 4-1 edge. Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/N. Greenville) answered for Catawba as he followed Garrett Furr’s (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) leadoff single with his own two-run homer. TC reliever Jason Gardner shut down Catawba after that, allowing only a leadoff single to White the rest of the way.
Pioneer starter Craig Goodman tossed five innings to earn the win. He allowed just three hits and struck out nine. TC padded its lead in the ninth on Colon’s RBI double and Rolondo Bonner’s two-run homer.
