Thompson beats clock to lift Women's Soccer to 1-0 win

SALISBURY, NC – Freshman Kyley Thompson (Hagerstown, MD) scored in the final 10 seconds to lift Catawba to a 1-0 win over visiting Longwood in women’s soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Frock Field. The Lady Indians improve to 3-0 with the win, while Longwood, which entered the game as the 10th ranked team in the Southeast Region, falls to 1-1-1. Thompson helped create nearly all of Catawba’s scoring chances before finally notching the game-winner with just eight seconds to play. Catawba nearly scored in the opening minutes, but Megan Mainer’s (Raleigh, NC) header off the first of 11 Lady Indian corner kicks went just wide. Thompson created a great chance in the final minutes of the half as she beat the defense to the endline and passes back to Jamie Fink (Woodbridge, VA), but her waist-high, one-time volley hit the crossbar. Longwood had a great chance to go on top in the second half, a shot from Tiffany Gruschow (Roanoke, VA) also bounced off the crossbar. As the game appeared headed to overtime, Thompson raced on a ball from Robin Berkey (W. Boylston, MA) between two defenders, chipped over the Lancer keeper and touched the ball into an open net in the 90th minute. Kim Clayton (Haw River, NC) made two saves to post her third consecutive shutout to open the season.
