Ivanovic's 20 Points Helps Women's Basketball Over Brevard
BREVARD, NC -- Senior Milica Ivanovic (Belgrade, SERBIA/Sports High/Bethel) scored 20 points and helped Catawba pull away from host Brevard to post a 68-62 victory in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Boshamer Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 13-10 overall and 7-6 in the SAC, while the Tornados fall to 6-17 and 2-11.
The Lady Indians trailed 40-36 with 14 minutes to play, but used a 17-3 run to take control. Ivanovic tied the game at 40-all then Elizabeth Merritt (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) put Catawba up for good at 44-42 with 11:09 left. Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day) scored five straight points and Ivanovic capped the run on a three-pointer for a 53-43 edge with 8:11 remaining.
Brevard scored seven straight points to get close, but Ivanovic scored six points and Lauren Lewis (Concord, NC/N. Mecklenburg HS) added a three-pointer to push the Catawba lead back to 64-56 with 2:32 left. Lewis and Ivanovic added free throws down the stretch to keep Catawba out front.
Ivanovic hit on 7-of-14 shots and went 2-for-3 from behind the arc. As a team, the Lady Indians were 7-for-12 from long range. Hicks and Merritt both posted double-doubles for Catawba. Hicks had 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Merritt added 11 points and 10 boards. Lewis chipped in with 10 points.
Anna Schlobohm came off the bench to hit on 7-of-11 shots to lead Brevard with 17 points. Lindsay Brendle and Micheala Watkins each scored 16 for the Tornados.
Catawba led early at 12-6, but baskets by Watkins and Schlobohm helped bring Brevard even. Brevard got a three-pointer by Schlobohm and a basket by Watkins in the final 1:22 of the half to lead 30-25 at the break.
The Lady Indians shot 45.5% for the contest and used a hefty 42-27 edge on the boards. Catawba did commit 19 turnovers, but only eight in the second half. Brevard had 10 of its 13 miscues in the final period and shot 44.8% for the game, but were only 3-of-18 from behind the arc.
