Men's Basketball Can't Dig Out of Early Hole at Brevard
BREVARD, NC -- Josh Roper hit on 10-of-15 shots to score 26 points in leading host Brevard to a 90-75 win over Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Boshamer Gym. The Tornados improve to 9-10 overall and 6-7 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 8-13 and 4-9.
Josh Jordan followed Roper with 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to complete a double-double. Vincent Dombroswki added a dozen points and was a key in a first half surge. The Tornados hit on 53% from the field and held a 38-28 edge on the boards.
Catawba was led by Dominick Reid (Charlotte, NC/Cannon School), who scored 18 points, and freshman Keon Moore (Colerain, NC/Bertie HS), who followed with 16 points. The Indians shot 44% for the game and suffered 17 turnovers.
A 14-1 run midway through the opening half helped the Tornados build a comfortable lead that they never gave up. Catawba had trimmed an early 22-8 deficit to 24-21 following a three-pointer by Reid. Up 27-22, Dombrowski had a three-pointer and a three-point play to help Brevard retake control. The Tornados would lead 55-37 at the break.
The Indians made an early run in the second half, scoring the first eight points to get within ten, but Roper had a three-pointer and a layup to push the lead to 60-45 and Catawba never got closer than 12 the rest of the way. The lead was as much as 22 at the midpoint of the half.
