Moyer's Walk-Off Homer Gives Baseball Doubleheader Sweep of Shippensburg
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba rallied late to take both ends of a baseball doubleheader from visiting Shippensburg on Saturday afternoon at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians rallied for two runs in the eighth to take game one 2-1, while Austin Moyer (Greensboro, NC/SE Guilford HS/USC Upstate) hit a walk-off two-run homer to win game two 5-3. The Indians improve to 5-2, while the Raiders fall to 0-5.
Game one was a pitching battle. Shippensburg starter Nick Umberger (Downingtown, PA) tossed six shutout innings, while Tribe starter Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) went eight innings and allowed just an unearned run.
The Raiders got on the board in the second without a hit. Cody Kulp (Boyertown, PA) started the inning with a high pop up that was misplayed, which allowed him to reach second. He moved to third on a fly out and scored on Pat Kregeloh (Effort, PA) sacrifice fly. Lomascolo kept Catawba in the game by stranding seven Raider runners until the Indians rallied.
After an out to start the eighth, five straight Catawba batters reached to put the Indians on top. Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS) singled and Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) was hit by a pitch. Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/N. Greenville) singled to load the bases. Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) singled home the tying run and Moyer drew a walk to force home the go-ahead run.
Wil Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) sat down Shippensburg in order in the ninth to post his first save. He struck out the final batter. Lomascolo scattered five hits and walked two, while posting five strikeouts to improve to 1-1. Houston had three hits and stole three bases for Catawba.
Jimmy Miller (Hummelstown, PA) took the loss in relief for the Raiders. A.J. Czap (Philipsburg, PA) collected two of the five hits for Shippensburg in the opener.
Catawba trailed most of game two, but rallied in the fifth. Down 2-0, Hohn hit a game-tying home run and Furr followed with a solo shot to give the Tribe a 3-2 lead. Shippensburg drew even in the seventh. Jesse Smith (Hanover, PA) singled to open the frame, was sacrificed to second and went to third on a wild pitch. Sam Phillips (Harrisburg, PA) delivered a two-out single to tie the game.
After an out in the Catawba seventh, Furr drew a walk and Moyer followed with his game-winning homer. It marked the first hit for Moyer after 15 at bats. He had drawn 11 walks.
JJ Jankowksi (McMurray, PA/Peters Township HS/Miami,OH) improved to 2-0 as he went the distance, allowing three runs off six hits with six strikeouts. Bostian, Furr and Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) each had two hits in the nightcap for Catawba. Phillips had two hits for Shippensburg.
