Softball Opens Season With Sweep of Georgia College

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba opened its 2011 softball season winning both ends of a doubleheader from visiting Georgia College and State University on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field.  The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 9-1 and 6-2.  The Bobcats fall to 1-5.

In the first game the Lady Indians opened the scoring in the second inning off three walks and an RBI single by sophomore Casey Baucom (Marshville, NC/Piedmont HS).  In the third, a lead-off double by Carly Sabat (Warren, OH/Howland HS) was followed by two singles, three walks, a hit-by-pitch, and a wild pitch to score five more.  Baucom capped the frame with a two-run single.

Catawba added two more in the fourth and one more on a walk-off double in the fifth by Alli Justice (Bishopville, MD/Decatur HS).  Junior Brittney Murray (Asheboro, NC/E. Randolph HS) picked up the win for the Lady Indians.  She recorded the complete game, tallying seven strikeouts and allowing only three hits.  Sabrina Chandler (Covington, GA) took the loss for the Bobcats.

In the second game, Catawba picked up where it left off in game one when Justice hit her first grand slam in a Tribe uniform for a 4-0 lead in the third.  The Bobcats cut the lead in half in the fourth off a two-run homerun by Haley Burnett (Columbus, GA).

After Catawba scored a run on an error, Anna Parker (Columbus, GA) got the Bobcats back within two runs on an RBI single.  Catawba plated the final run in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Sami Santoli (Nesconset, NY/Smithtown West HS).

Catawba freshman Emily Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) kept the Bobcats off the board the rest of the way to get the game two win.  Huneycutt surrendered just four hits with three walks and three strikeouts in the complete game.  Chelsie Huffman (Powder Springs, GA) also threw a complete game but took the loss for GCSU.

Sabat and Baucom each had two hits in both games of the doubleheader.  Erin Witalison (Gold Hill, NC/Gray Stone Day) delivered three RBI in the game one win for Catawba.  Burnett and Whitney Okvist (Kennesaw, GA) produced a hit in each game for the Bobcats.
