Hester's Grand Slam Helps Softball to Split of Doubleheader at UNCP
PEMBROKE, NC -- Catawba and host UNC Pembroke split a softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at LRA Field. The Catawba Indians won the opener 6-3, while the Braves picked up a 5-3 win in game two. The Lady Indians are now 3-1 on the year, while UNCP is 6-4.
Khourtni Hester (Waldorf, MD/McDonough) provided the big blow in game one with a two-out grand slam in the first to stake Catawba to an early 4-0 lead. UNPC scored twice in its first to slice the lead in half. With two outs, Loren Bartz double home a run and Holly Berry followed with a run-scoring single.
The Lady Indians came right back, adding a run in the second on a double by Alli Justice (Bishopville, MD/Decatur HS) that plated Carly Sabat (Warren, OH/Howland HS). Sabat had three hits and scored twice in the opener. Ashley Harrell drew a bases-loaded walk in the third to pull the Braves to within 5-3, but Brittany Murray (Asheboro, NC/E. Randolph HS) got out of the frame and kept UNCP off the board the rest of the way.
Sabat singled home Casey Baucom (Marshville, NC/Piedmont HS) with her final hit of the game in the fourth. UNCP got the tying run to the plate with one out in the seventh, but Murray got two fly balls to end the contest and improve to 2-0. The junior scattered nine hits and struck out four.
Catawba battled back from an early 3-0 deficit in the nightcap to pull even when Amanda Terry (Cordova, NC/Richmond Senior HS) scored on an error, but the Braves pushed across single runs in the fifth and sixth to take the win. Berry had a two-out single in the fifth to put UNCP back on top and Lynn Grantham added a solo home run to start the sixth.
Pembroke took a 3-1 lead in the second, benefitting from a pair of two-out errors by the Lady Indians to plate all three runs. A pair of passed balls had allowed Mollie Kovalcin (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe HS) to score in the top of the second to give Catawba a 1-0 lead. Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) singled home Terry with two outs in the third to cut the margin to 3-2.
Jamie Burwell allowed just one earned run off five hits to grab the win. She struck out ten. Berry had three hits for the Braves, while Kellie Van Dyke added two. Emily Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) gave up seven hits and two earned runs while posting three strikeouts in taking the loss.
