Volleyball splits matches at AASU Pirate ClassicSAVANNAH, GA -- Catawba College’s volleyball team split four matches at the AASU Pirate Classic over the weekend. The Lady Indians defeated USC-Aiken and Francis Marion in tough five-game matches on Friday, then fell to ranked teams Armstrong Atlantic and Florida Southern in four games on Saturday. Catawba now stands at 7-3 on the season. The Lady Indians opened against Aiken, winning 30-23, 28-30, 23-30, 30-27 and 16-14. Hope Miller (Newton, NC) recorded 15 kills and 21 digs in the win to lead Catawba. Rachel LaRoche (Wilmington, DE) had 14 kills and 17 digs. Later on Friday, Catawba topped Francis Marion 15-30, 30-28, 30-20, 22-30 and 18-16. LaRoche tallied 15 kills, with seven digs and six blocks in the win. Elizabeth Hewitt (Hickory, NC) posted a season- high14 blocks (3 solo, 11 assist) and added six kills. Against host Armstrong Atlantic on Saturday, Catawba won the opening game 32-30, but then fell 22-30, 18-30 and 20-30. LaRoche again led with 15 kills, while Harrison had 10 kills and five blocks. Heather Hawkins (Troutman, NC) had eight kills and five blocks. The Lady Indians also took the opening game from Florida Southern in their final match, but would lose 30-28, 28-30, 10-30 and 26-30. Erin Naumann (Cave Creek, AZ) totaled 13 kills and added 20 digs to lead Catawba. Stephanie Brendel (Drexel, NC) posted a game-high 27 digs. #######
