Men's Basketball Falls to Lenoir-Rhyne Despite Moore's 21 Points
SALISBURY, NC -- Lenoir-Rhyne got 19 points from freshman Allan Jones (Clemmons, NC) as the Bears snapped a 14-game losing streak with a 65-59 win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. Lenoir-Rhyne improves to 3-20 overall and 2-13 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 9-14 and 5-10.
Jones hit on 9-of-14 shots to lead four players in double-figures for the Bears. Jeff Thomas (Chapel Hill, NC) scored 14 points before fouling out, while Kevin Davis (Charlotte, NC) tossed in 11 points. Jon Haithcock (Concord, NC) chipped in with 10 points, dished out five assists and posted four steals.
Freshman Keon Moore (Colerain, NC/Bertie HS) led Catawba with a game-high 21 points. Dominick Reid (Charlotte, NC/Cannon School) also reached double figures with 11 points. The Indians shot only 36%, while the Bears connected on 53%.
Catawba led early in part to Moore’s eight points in the first seven and half minutes. The Indians held a 19-11 edge after a three-pointer by Cameron Lovelace (Cherryville, NC/Cherryville HS/N. Florida) at the 11:13 mark of the opening half.
Lenoir-Rhyne fought back and used a 13-4 run to go up 24-23 on a three-pointer by Davis with just under five minutes left before the break. The Bears pushed the lead to nine before a late three-pointer by Catawba sent Lenoir-Rhyne to the half with a 34-28 edge.
A layin by Jones gave the Bears their largest lead off the game at 50-35 five minutes into the second half. Catawba battled back with a 17-4 run to trim the margin to 54-52 on a layup by Moore with 5:35 left. Catawba twice came within a bucket again in the closing minute, but the Bears made 7-of-8 at the line in the final 30 seconds to secure the win.
