Owens Sets School and Paralympian Mark at BGMC Swimming Championships
CHARLOTTE, NC – Catawba opened action on Wednesday night at the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Swimming Championships being held through Saturday at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center. Sophomore Ashley Owens (Stockbridge, GA/Stockbridge HS) highlighted the night for the Catawba Indians as she set not only a school record in the 1000 free, but a Paralympian mark as well.
Owens finished sixth with her time of 10:36.95. It cut just over two seconds off the previous Catawba record which was set in 2002 by Melissa Schiffel at 10:39.12. The time was a NCAA II ‘B’ cut. The other even for the women was the 800 free relay where the ladies took eighth place. The Catawba men were disqualified in the relay and did not enter the 1000 free.
