CHARLOTTE, NC – Catawba set a pair of school records in second-day action on Thursday at the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Swimming Championships at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center. Laurenn Singleton (Elkin, NC/Elkin HS) broke the 200 IM mark, while Christoffer Stolt (Stockholm, SWEDEN/Fryshuset) topped his own record in the 50 free.
After swimming the record of 2:11.89 in the 200 IM preliminaries, Singleton finished 11th in the final. That time of 2:12.67 also bested the previous mark of 2:12.87 set by Melissa Schiffel in 2000. Ashley Owens (Stockbridge, GA/Stockbridge HS) had the best individual finish of the day as she posted a sixth-place finish in the 500 free with a time of 5:12.49.
For the men, Stolt trimmed nearly two-tenths off his record in the 50 free with a time of 21.36 in the prelim. He went 15th in the final with a time of 21.54. Mikael Karlsson (Norsborg, SWEDEN/Tullinge Gymnasium) swam a NCAA ‘B’ cut time in the 200 IM at 1:56.04 which placed him 14th. It was the second fastest time in school history. Also earning a ‘B’ final swim was Taft Kallam (Randleman, NC/Randleman HS), who was 13th in the 500 free.
Owens helped the women’s 200 free relay team to a win in the ‘B’ final. Her leadoff leg of 25.87 broke her own American Paralympic record. The women finished sixth in the 400 medley relay. The men’s 200 free relay team placed seventh and the 400 medley relay finished eighth.
