Baseball Tops LMU 9-4 to Open League Slate
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba opened South Atlantic Conference play with a 9-4 win over Lincoln Memorial in baseball action on Friday night at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians improve to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while the Railsplitters fall to 5-7 and 0-1.
Lincoln Memorial struck first with a pair of runs in the opening half inning, but the Indians answered with a five-spot. The Railsplitters got leadoff singles from Cody Baker (Knoxville, TN) and Joseph Horsely (Corryton, TN) then both would come around on a pair of wild pitches for the early 2-0 lead.
The first five Catawba batters reached base safely with Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/N. Greenville) and Austin Moyer (Greensboro, NC/SE Guilford HS/USC Upstate) getting RBI singles to tie the game. Hohn scored on an error after the Moyer hit to give the Indians a 3-2 edge. Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) greeted LMU reliever Austin Johnson (Versailles, KY) with a RBI double and John Neese (Summerfield, NC/NW Guilford/Guilford Tech) added a sacrifice fly for the 5-0 lead.
Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) singled home a run for Catawba in the second, while Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS) and Julio Zubillaga (Salisbury, NC/Carson HS) singled home runs in the fifth to extend the lead to 8-2. Nolan Woody (Chattanooga, TN) and Baker drove in runs for the Railsplitters in the sixth to trim the deficit to 8-4, but three Catawba relievers limited LMU to just three hits over the final three and a third innings.
Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) went five and two-thirds innings to improve to 2-1 on the year. He scattered six hits with a walk and eight strikeouts. Bostian and Moyer each had two hits, while Underwood collected two RBI.
Steven Starbird (Rutledge, TN) took the loss for LMU, falling to 1-2. Johnson went seven innings in relief and allowed two earned runs off five hits with six strikeouts. Baker and John Couch (Bonnyman, KY) each had two hits for the Railsplitters.
