Women's Basketball Falls Short in Rally Bid at Tusculum
GREENEVILLE, TN -- Tusculum’s Jasmine Gunn hit a pair of free throws four seconds remaining to ice the Pioneers’ 55-51 win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Arena. The Pioneers improve to 17-7 overall and 13-3 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 14-12 and 8-8.
Gunn’s points at the stripe were the only points scored in the final three minutes after Catawba had rallied from a 13-point deficit with just over eight minutes to play. A three-pointer and a jumper by Elizabeth Merritt (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) was followed by a layup from Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day) at the 3:18 mark which capped a seven-point run that pulled the Lady Indians within 53-51.
Catawba had three possessions to tie, but missed two shots and committed a turnover before Gunn sank the final points at the line. Gunn finished with a game-high 20 points. Catherine Hintz followed with 12 points and Kendal Baxter tossed in 11 off the bench. Jasmine Parker pulled down a dozen rebounds. Hicks was the only double-digit scorer for Catawba and totaled 19 points.
Tusculum spurted out to a double-figure lead early in the second half. Up 33-30, the Pioneers went on a 12-2 run to take a 45-32 edge with twelve minutes left. The Pioneers still led by that margin when Milica Ivanovic (Belgrade, SERBIA/Sports High/Bethel) and Kisha Long (Dallas, NC/Gaston Day) hit consecutive three-pointer for the Lady Indians to spark the rally.
