Swimming Concludes BGMC Championships with Relay Record
CHARLOTTE, NC -- Catawba finished up action at the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Swimming Championships on Saturday at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center. The Catawba women finished seventh among the 13 schools, while the men were tenth.
On the final day, the women set a relay record, while sophomore Ashley Owens (Stockbridge, GA/Stockbridge HS) established another American Paralympic standard. Owens was sixth in the 1650 free with a time of 17:50.55. It was the third fastest time in school history.
Owens also swam on the record-breaking 400 free relay team. The mark fell in the preliminaries with teammates Laurenn Singleton (Elkin, NC/Elkin HS), Leah Constan-Tatos (Johannesburg, SOUTH AFRICA/St. Andrews HS) and Tori Kiefner (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS). The team posted a time of 3:39.58. In the final, Catawba placed fifth with a time of 3.39.66.
On the men’s side, the top swim of the night went to freshman Taft Kallam (Randleman, NC/Randleman HS). He just missed a school mark in the 200 back and finsihed 10th with a time of 1:56.02. It was just two-tenths of a second off the record.
