Women's Soccer victorious in league openerSALISBURY, NC Catawba opened league play with a 2-1 win over visiting Carson-Newman in South Atlantic Conference womens soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Frock Field. Freshman Kyley Thompson (Hagerstown, MD) notched her second straight game-winner, this time with just over 16 minutes to play, to lift Catawba. The Lady Indians improve to 4-0 and 1-0 in the SAC, while Carson-Newman falls to 3-2 and 0-1.Freshman Robin Berkey (West Boylston, MA) opened the scoring, giving Catawba a 1-0 lead in the 43rd minute. It came off an assist from Thompson, who leads the team with four on the year. Melanie Waters (Easley, SC) would even the match in the 61st minute before Thompson scored the game winner at the 73:22 mark. Erin Pangerl (Boca Raton, FL) posted nine saves for the Lady Eagles, while Kim Clayton (Haw River, NC) had four. The goal was the first allowed by Catawba in four games.
