Hicks' 27 Points Not Enough as Women's Basketball Falls at Mars Hill

MARS HILL, NC -- Mars Hill got 27 points and eight assists from Brittini Young in a 90-75 win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Stanford Arena.  The Lions improve to 16-9 overall and 9-8 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 14-13 and 8-9.

Young canned 7-of-13 shots, including four three-pointers, and made all nine free throw attempts to lead the Lions.  Maragret Harvey added 21 points, while Jessica Jones chipped in with 16 off the bench.  Mars Hill hit nine three-pointers for the game and held a 38-30 edge on the boards.

Dana Hicks (York, SC/Gaston Day) matched Young’s game-high honors with 27 points while pulling down seven rebounds for Catawba.  Hicks went 8-of-11 from the field and made 11-of-13 from the stripe.  Milica Ivanovic (Belgrade, SERBIA/Sports High/Bethel) added 15 points and canned a trio of three-pointers.

After the teams traded early baskets, the Lions used a 9-0 run to move out to a 16-6 lead at the 14:27 mark of the opening half.  A pair of three-pointers by Ivanovic and another by Lauren Lewis (Concord, NC/N. Mecklenburg HS) helped pull the Lady Indians within 26-23 midway through the half.

Following a second three-pointer by Lewis, Mars Hill surged ahead 48-32 behind a 16-4 run.  The Lions took a 52-42 lead to the break, making 7-of-9 from behind the arc in the half and shooting 56%.  Catawba shot 59%, but could not match the long-range shooting of the Lions.

Catawba never threatened in the second half as Mars Hill went up 64-46 in the opening three minutes.  Young gave the Lions their largest lead at 20 points with 8:36 left.
