Reid Carries Men's Basketball Into SAC Tournament With Career-High 32 Points
MARS HILL, NC -- Senior Dominick Reid (Charlotte, NC/Cannon School) scored a career-high 32 points as Catawba secured a spot in the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament with an 88-79 win over host Mars Hill on Wednesday night at Stanford Arena. The Catawba Indians improve to 11-14 overall and 7-10 in the SAC, while the Lions fall to 9-16 and 6-11.
Reid put the Indians on his back in the second half to lead Catawba in the must-win game to qualify for the tournament. The senior scored 21 of his points in the final half and also dished out nine assists and grabbed six rebounds in the contest.
Mars Hill never quit and cut a 10-point deficit to three in the closing seconds. After Cody King’s three-pointer following a turnover made the score 82-79 with 22 seconds to go, Reid hit two free throws then following a Lion miss and Stuart Thomson (Poynton, ENGLAND/Poynton HS) iced the game with a breakaway layup.
Kelvin Drakeford (Charlotte, NC/Cannon School/Barton) added 14 points and six rebounds for the Indians, while Thomson scored a dozen points off the bench, including eight in the final 1:07 of the game. Keon Moore (Colerain, NC/Bertie HS) tallied 10 points before fouling out with four minutes remaining.
Consecutive three-pointers by Reid capped a 12-0 run by Catawba that gave the Indians a 53-42 lead with 12:24 remaining. Mars Hill whittled the lead down to 57-53 with 6:17 left after a three-pointer and layup by Tarron Stewart. Reid answered with a three-pointer and added two free throws to up the Catawba edge to 62-53 with 5:50 to go.
The Lions again rallied and trimmed the deficit to 62-59 with 3:57 remaining. A dunk by Drakeford and a three-pointer by Cameron Lovelace (Cherryville, NC/Cherryville HS/N. Florida) gave the Indians breathing room and when Reid canned the last of his six three-pointers, Catawba led 74-64 with 1:51 left. A three-pointer by Stewart and three free throws from Austin Patton drew the Lions within 74-70 with 1:33 remaining.
After a pair of free throws from Justin Huntley (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS), Kejuan Mayo (South Boston, VA/Halifax HS) had a block that led to two free throws by Thomson and a steal that led to a Thomson dunk to give the Indians what appeared to be a safe 80-70 margin with 52 seconds left. Reid was then whistled for a foul and a technical that led to four free throws. Thomson got a quick layup, but Stewart canned a jumper then King his three-pointer to make the final seconds interesting.
Mars Hill led by eight with just under seven minutes to go in the first half, but Catawba rallied back to lead 36-35 at the break. Huntley dished out eight assists for the Indians, while Mayo blocked three shots. The Indians held a 45-39 edge on the boards and pulled down 18 off the offensive glass. The Tribe also had just eight turnovers to 14 for the Lions.
Stewart matched Reid’s 32 points and added nine rebounds for Mars Hill. Patton and Dion Malachi each tossed in a dozen while Sammy Emile scored 10 points, but hit only 3-of-17 shots.
