Softball Splits Pair of One-Run Games at Catawba Invitational
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba split another pair of games at the Catawba Invitational softball tournament on Saturday at Salisbury Community Park. The Catawba Indians posted a 7-6 win over Winston-Salem State (4-7) then dropped a 3-2 decision to Fairmont State (1-2). The Lady Indians are now 8-6 on the year.
Catawba used several miscues by Winston-Salem State to plate five runs in the fourth to take a 7-3 lead. The Rams cut the margin to 7-5 on two-run homer in the fifth by Kayla Woodbury and pulled a run closer on a wild pitch in the seventh, but Emily Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) got a strikeout and a lineout with the tying run on third to record the save.
The Rams used a walk then a strikeout-wild pitch with two outs to score in the opening inning on a two-run double by Brittany Cato. Khourtni Hester (Waldorf, MD/McDonough HS) pulled the Lady Indians even on a two-run homer in the second.
Cato homered for WSSU in the fourth before Catawba’s outburst in its half. The Lady Indians started the inning with two runners reaching after striking out. After a fielder’s choice, Hester doubled home the tying run and Sami Santoli (Nesconset, NY/Smithtown West) put the Lady Indians on top with her double.
Huneycutt entered after Woodbury’s home run in the fifth and got two comebackers to end the frame. She struck out the side in the sixth before having to get out of trouble in the seventh. Brittany Murray (Asheboro, NC/E. Randolph HS) got the win as she scattered five hits and struck out five over four and a third innings.
Hester had two of Catawba’s five hits and delivered three RBI. Cato had two hits and three RBI for the Rams.
Fairmont State scored twice in the first to take an early lead in game two and worked out of a jam in the seventh to hold on. Amanda Terry (Cordova, NC/Richmond Senior HS) pulled Catawba to within 3-2 on a triple with no outs, but was stranded at third as Chelsea Cobb struck out the next two batters and got the final out on an infield pop up.
Mollie Kovalcin (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe HS) had singled to open the seventh and had a RBI double in the fourth to pull the Lady Indians within 2-1. Kayla Gray had RBI singles for Fairmont State in the first and fifth frames. She had two hits for Falcons. Kovalcin and Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) had two hits for Catawba.
