Lacrosse Posts First-Ever Shutout In Win Over Ohio Valley
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba posted its first-ever shutout in men’s lacrosse, blanking visiting Ohio Valley 24-0 on Sunday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. Freshman Davis Hughes (Windermere, FL/W. Orange HS) totaled seven points, while junior Alex Hodges (Columbia, SC/Whitney Point,NY HS/Broome CC) handed out five assists to help the Catawba Indians improve to 3-0.
Freshman John Scheich (Waxhaw, NC/Weddington HS) got Catawba rolling, scoring just 21 seconds into the contest. Scheich added two more goals before the quarter was over to help the Indians go on top 7-0. Marty Tuohy (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) had two goals and two assists in the period.
Catawba set a school record with 12 goals in the second quarter to take a commanding 19-0 lead at the break. Braden Artem (Acton, Ontario, CANADA/Christ the King) had two early goals in the quarter, while Hughes added three goals and a pair of helpers. Hodges delivered four of his assists in the quarter.
The Indians held possession for most of the second half, adding three goals in the third quarter and two more in the fourth for the final margin. Catawba held a 54-3 edge in total shots and had a 59-15 advantage in ground balls. The Indians won 24 of 27 face-offs.
Michael Pecchia (Coquitlum, BC, CANADA/Heritage Woods) made all three saves for the Indians in the opening 22 minutes. Christian Klimczyk (Linthicum, MD/Cardinal Gibbons) played the final 38 minutes and was untested. Tyler Ross (Fairmont, WV) stopped a dozen shots for the Fighting Scots.
