Murray Tosses No-Hitter as Softball Downs West Liberty 9-0
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba junior Brittany Murray (Asheboro, NC/E. Randolph HS) threw just the second complete-game no-hitter in school history in a 9-0 win over West Liberty at the Catawba Invitational softball tournament on Sunday afternoon at Salisbury Community Park. The Catawba Indians improve to 9-6 on the season.
Murray walked just two batters and a third runner reached base on an error to open the game. The sophomore struck out three and improved to 6-2 on the year. The only other complete-game no-hitter in school history was pitched by Donna Grubbs in 1990, the first season of fast-pitch for Catawba.
Amanda Terry (Cordova, NC/Richmond Senior HS) collected three hits and scored twice, while Khourtni Hester (Waldorf, MD/McDonough HS) tripled twice and had two RBI to pace the offense. Casey Baucom (Marshville, NC/Piedmont HS) singled home a run in the second to put the Lady Indians on the board. Terry followed with a triple and Alli Justice (Bishopville, MD/Decatur HS) added a home run as Catawba led 4-0 after the inning.
The Lady Indians added five more runs in the fourth. Terry doubled and scored on a wild pitch, while Hester drove in two with her second triple. Kayla Myers (Bryson City, NC/Swain Co. HS) and Mollie Kovalcin (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe HS) also singled home runs in the inning.
