MARS HILL, NC – Catawba got another strong start from Austin Moyer (Greensboro, NC/SE Guilford HS/USC Upstate) and completed a series sweep of host Mars Hill in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Henderson Field. The Catawba Indians won 9-1 to improve to 12-3 overall and 6-0 in the SAC. The Lions fall to 7-11 and 2-4.
Moyer scattered seven hits over seven innings and allowed just a single run. He walked one and fanned nine as he improved to 3-0. Wil Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) and Ross Whitley (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) kept the Lions off the board over the final two innings.
Two walks and a pair of ground balls helped Catawba take the lead in the second without a hit. Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) drew the leadoff walk and Brett Underwood’s (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS) grounder to third got him home for the early lead. A Mars Hill error, a walk and a two-run double by John Neese (Summerfield, NC/NW Guilford HS/Guilford Tech) stretched the lead to 3-0 in the fourth.
The Indians padded the lead for Moyer in the fifth, scoring five times. Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/N. Greenville) singled home the first run and Furr followed with a two-run double as the first four Catawba batters had hits in the frame. Brett Holmgren (Middleboro, MA/Coyle & Cassidy HS) singled home the final two runs.
Mars Hill scored its lone run in the sixth. Rusty Smith delivered the run with a two-out single which followed one-out hits by Dalton Hardee and Adam Lewis. Hohn capped the scoring with a solo homer in the ninth.
Hohn and Neese each had two hits and two RBI, while Furr scored three runs. Lewis, Brandon King and Michael Bueker each posted two hits for the Lions.
